Whitney is one of my favorite books for Christian living. It was given to me over ten years ago, and it is easily my most dog-eared, marked-up book on my shelf.

Offering sage advice and practical guidelines, Ryan shows how we can integrate the emotional, physical, and intellectual aspects of our lives into a relationship with God. While based firmly on Christian tradition, this book also draws enrichment, wisdom, and insight from other world religions, bringing them to bear on Christian faith and practices. These disciplines may bear some fruit if practiced for a week, but they will bear much better and much more lasting fruit if practiced over an entire lifetime. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life was a book I read almost a decade ago—the first book I ever read on the subject of the spiritual by: It is comprised mostly of the most rudimentary disciplines and explanations of the Christian life, interspersed with the occasional, seemingly off-topic theological discussion.

This book cannot decide whether it is a step-by-step for the very much new-believer or a dogmatic assertion of some random, much disputed finer theological points/5. The title of the book is Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life and is published by NavPress of Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Whitney earned his at Trinity Evangelical Divinity school, and served as a pastor for 19 years prior to his position at Midwestern. Spiritual disciplines for my walk with God. Spiritual disciplines for my walk with other believers. Spiritual disciplines for my walk in the world.

These three overlapping circles really represent the realm in which believers live in this world while living an other-worldly life. And the nine disciplines, as I see them are. The book closes with encouragment in persevering in the disciplines, even in the inevitable times of spiritual dryness.

Each of the disciplines is drawn from and examined in the light of Scripture. The author shows how the Biblical basis for each discipline, explains how it will help the Christian grow in godliness and provides practical 5/5(6).

This kind. Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life by Donald Whitney is one of the first books that I received as a new Christian. If you could see my copy, you would think that I must have had it for decades. The binding is coming apart. It has so many mark-ups you wonder why I.

This book is a decent introduction to some spiritual practices to help Christians grow in godliness, but it feels incomplete. Donald Whitney chose to focus this book on the "personal" disciplines alone, meaning that there are some core disciplines that are glossed over such as fellowship and confession, as well as dimensions of disciplines like prayer that are unnecessarily limited in the /5.

He is well known for writing his classic book, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, which was originally published inand then revised and expanded in to its present form. Don is also the author of the new book from Crossway titled, Praying the Bible.

We’ll talk more about the new book later. Whitney, thank you for. On this page, I will share a list of common spiritual disciplines. I do that by sharing the table of contents of a few popular spiritual formation books.

The old disciplines are breaking down Above all, the discipline of divine grace is derided as legalism or is entirely unknown to a generation that is largely illiterate in the Scriptures.

We need the rugged strength of Christian character. Our book of the month will challenge you in a lot of ways. It’s called Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, written by Donald Whitney. If you were to do some research on spiritual disciplines, you would find quite a variety of activities that are included.

Whitney has identified ten that he includes in his book. This book examines the Spiritual Disciplines of Bible intake, prayer, worship, evangelism, service, stewardship, fasting, silence and solitude, journaling, and learning.

This is by no means, however, an exhaustive list of the Disciplines of Christian living. The book begins by laying out the foundation and impetus for all of the Christian disciplines in the first chapter: for the purpose of godliness.

Whitney notes: The spiritual disciplines are the God-given means we are to use in the spirit-filled pursuit of godliness. godly people or discipline people. SPIRITUAL DISCIPLINES #1.

STUDY. All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction and for training in righteousness (2 Timothy )Of all the disciplines, none may be more important than the study of God’s Word.

Only through the instruction of the Bible can we understand the ways and the will of God. Dallas Willard's examination of the disciplines of the Christian life is an unparalleled book on the subject.

I have never read its equal. In Christianity today, there is so much emphasis on a quick conversion and the love and mercy of God, but rarely does a teacher speak on the difficult topic of the strain and pain and longevity of the daily walk with by: of the spiritual disciplines, and he does so in such a winsome way that will motivate all of us to practice the spiritual disciplines of the Christian life.

This book will be great both for new believers just starting on their journey and as a refresher course for those of us already along the way.” Jerry Bridges, author, The Pursuit of Holiness.
